Molten salt is one of the most proven technologies for storing and transferring heat at the temperatures that power generation and industrial applications require. Stable, scalable, and dispatchable.
Aalborg CSP has been engineering molten salt systems since the early years of utility-scale CSP deployment. That means not just system design and sizing, but the full engineering scope that a molten salt installation requires in practice: heat exchangers, piping and expansion systems, balance of plant, heat tracing, freeze protection, and the materials and corrosion challenges that come with operating at high temperatures over decades. This is where engineering experience from operating plants matters, and where close to four decades of project references gives us a depth that R&D alone cannot replicate.
That engineering experience runs in parallel with one of the most sustained molten salt R&D programmes in Europe. Through projects including REACT-EU, PHOTON, HELIOTROPE, MOSAIC, SunCharge, and REINVEST - developed with universities, research institutes, and industry partners - we have been advancing operating temperatures toward 850°C, improving materials and corrosion resistance, and integrating molten salt into new application contexts including coal plant conversion and next-generation nuclear thermal systems.
